ABSTRACT

COVID-19 outbreak decreases the amount of daily routine and lifestyle. Loneliness is stemming from a deficiency of social contact and social connectedness. As a result, adolescents are prone to loneliness during the outbreak. In addition, loneliness influences the emerging automatic thoughts in the cognitive domain. This research aims to explore the psychological perspective on loneliness experienced by adolescents during the COVID-19 outbreak. The research was conducted on 165 adolescents aged 12 -18 who actively engage in social media. Social and Emotional Loneliness Scale for Adults (SELSA) was used to obtain the data. The Z-score shows that social loneliness has a more significant effect on adolescents. The study indicated that loneliness is associated with automatic thoughts and need fulfilments. Participants' automatic thoughts are acquired and discussed further. © 2023 Author(s).

ABSTRACT

Background and Objectives: The decline in GDP caused by the global economic recession of 2008 and that caused by the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in the poor economy of countries around the globe with increased rates of unemployment and adverse job conditions. This systematic review aims to identify the impact of a Financial crisis on Psychological well-being, Life satisfaction, Health Satisfaction, and Financial Incapability. Methodology: The literature included in the review was searched from Feb 1, 2023, to March 26, 2023, by using the PUBMED database as the search engine. Studies discussing the impact of the financial or economic crisis on psychological well-being, Health, Life satisfaction, and Financial Incapabilities published in the English Language were included in this review whereas systematic reviews and metanalysis, case reports, articles published in languages other than English and articles with limited access were excluded. Result(s): Of the 26 articles found eligible for the study, there were 22 Quantitative studies, 2 qualitative studies, and 2 Mixed Method Studies. Most of the articles included in this study discussed the Global Economic crisis caused by COVID-19 and the Global Financial Crisis of 2008. Almost 80% of the studies included in this review discussed psychological well-being and the prevalence of psychological disorders including Depression, Anxiety, Stress, Fear, Loneliness, Burnout, and Suicide whereas the rest of the articles discussed mortality regarding mental disorders. Conclusion(s): Financial crisis or economic recession results in an increased prevalence of common mental disorders affecting psychological well-being by increasing rates of unemployment and adverse job conditions. ABSTRACT

During a global pandemic, another pandemic of loneliness impacted undergraduate college students and influenced the way members of the 18-25-year-old population lived and learned throughout a time of intentional distancing. Additionally, the insurgence of loneliness impacts members of the 18-25 age group in startling rates. This qualitative case study explored how undergraduate women who participate in comedy troupes fostered community while living and learning during a global pandemic known as COVID-19 between the spring of 2020 and the fall of 2021. The research added to the body of knowledge on how comedy and levity can enhance wellness and how humor can be brought into various aspects of life from work to play. This study explored how undergraduate students living in a time of heightened loneliness infused humor in their relationships with one another. The study explored the relationship dynamics built by women-identified comedians and focused on how the participants developed community by using humor, comedy, and levity as the pillars of their interactions. Lastly, this study is rooted in better understanding how higher education student affairs practitioners can better support collegiate comedians invested in their relationships with one another. ABSTRACT

This study aimed to explore the impact of the COVID-19 restrictions on social relationships of forensic psychiatric outpatients with preexisting social network-related problems. Data from 70 participants of an ongoing randomized controlled trial, investigating the effectiveness of a social network intervention among forensic psychiatric outpatients, were examined. Demographic characteristics, quality of social relationships, loneliness, and social support were assessed at baseline. During the COVID-19 pandemic, an additional questionnaire that contained quantitative and qualitative questions regarding the impact of COVID-19 restrictions on social relationships was administered. Participants showed high levels of loneliness and dissatisfaction with social relationships before COVID-19. The majority of forensic outpatients perceived no changes on social relationships due to the COVID-19 restrictions. Qualitative results revealed some participants already lived socially isolated. Negative changes on social relationships were related to deterioration of social contacts, interruption of daytime activities, changed mental health care, and well-being. Emotional loneliness predicted deteriorated general and romantic relationships. These findings suggest that social relationships of forensic patients with preexisting social network-related problems remain of concern throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. ABSTRACT

Background: The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has affected the medical education throughout the world. A study was done to assess the effect of education and psychological behavior on medical students. Aims and Objectives: The objective of the study is to evaluate the effect of COVID-19 on medical graduates in various aspects such as education, effect on clinical rotations, impact on the technology used for online classes, effect on quality of life, loneliness, sleep, and depressive symptoms. Material(s) and Method(s): A set of questions were distributed to Government Medical college, Suryapet students during November 2021-January 2022. Questionnaire aimed to study students' viewpoint of COVID-19's impact on their education, mental health, and willingness to participate clinically. Result(s): One hundred medical students from Government Medical College, Suryapet participated in this study. Most students (88%) agreed that pandemic had disrupted their medical education. About 64% agreed to attend clinical rotations and 68% of students accepting the risk of contracting COVID-19 in clinical rotations. COVID-19 had an impact on technology tools used for medical education. Students reported that COVID-19 had moderate impact on quality of life, sleep quality, anxiety, and depressive symptoms. Conclusion(s): The COVID-19 had an overall significant negative impact on undergraduate medical education. ABSTRACT

Introduction: According to the National Academies of Science, Medicine, and Engineering, even before the pandemic, 24% of Americans 65+ were considered socially isolated, and 43% of adults 60+ were lonely. Both experiences are associated with serious physical and mental health problems, including increased risks of dementia, stroke, depression, and suicidal ideation. As older adults engage in stricter social distancing to protect themselves from COVID-19, their risk of social isolation and loneliness is heightened. According to research by the Kaiser Family Foundation, 46% of adults 65+ reported that the worry and stress caused by pandemic has had a negative impact on their mental health. In order to combat this unique challenge, we must employ innovative, flexible solutions that adapt to the shifting circumstances and an uncertain future. Method(s): WH SeniorLink has developed an innovative program for integrating friendly visiting, mutual aid, needs assessment and case management, all delivered remotely by trained volunteers. The program was conceived, developed and executed since the beginning of COVID-19 restrictions and has grown to become a fully fledged 501(c)(3) organization, and is a model of flexible service delivery during this unusual time. The program operates through a volunteerism-mutual aid model. Volunteers are trained using online modules and quizzes and supervised by a licensed social worker, including training on needs and risk assessment. Volunteers are then matched with an older adult with similar interests and language preferences to provide friendly weekly phone calls, care packages and letters. Older adults with higher needs are referred to WH SeniorLink's service navigation program which operates using the online platform, Apricot, and is staffed by masters level social work interns and supervised by licensed social workers. Service navigation involves conducting comprehensive assessments and identifying resources and referrals. Older adults who express interest are also paired with each other to provide social support. Barriers to program development have included identifying consistent funding sources and volunteer attrition. Result(s): Data shows 169% growth in contacts made with older adults between May and October, with 2.5 times more older adults served in November than in May. Initial responses to the Dejong Gierveld Loneliness Scale and qualitative data collection reflect that older adults continue to feel lonely and isolated in the midst of the pandemic, but that WH SeniorLink is helping. By placing emphasis on empowering older adults to form sustained relationships with volunteers and their peers, WH SeniorLink encourages reciprocal relationships through which older adult participants are valued for their experiences and contributions. Conclusion(s): The mission of WH SeniorLink is to strengthen community ties and improve health outcomes among older New Yorkers by providing social-emotional support and connection to essential services. WH SeniorLink was founded during the COVID-19 pandemic, in response to the myriad of new challenges faced by older adults including greater risk of social isolation and increased disconnection from essential services. However, we recognize that the pandemic has only exacerbated a problem that began long before, and older adults are at risk of being left behind in the coming months and beyond. ABSTRACT

The Covid-19 pandemic forced the world population to incorporate prevention activities into their daily lives to preserve people's physical health. In Colombia, the national government, through resolutions and decrees, regulated quarantine and preventive isolation in order not to saturate health services and intensive care units, which were not prepared to respond to the disease. In this sense, this article analyzed the habits of physical activity, well-being, and quality of life in preventive isolation - Covid-19 in Bogota, Colombia. A cross-sectional descriptive quantitative study was conducted on a sample of 1,775 people with an average age of 43.5+or-25.5 years, of which 50.9% (n=903) corresponded to women and 49.1% (n=872) to men. It was found that due to the confinement the consumption of coffee and alcoholic beverages increased, as well as a decrease in physical activity. In addition, manifestations of anxiety, depression and feelings of loneliness were identified, which directly affected people's well-being and quality of life. It is expected that this type of research will contribute to the understanding of the impact of the contingency measures taken by the different nations to curb Covid-19 infections on people's health.

ABSTRACT

This study investigated the impact of loneliness on academic self-efficacy (ASE) and student engagement in the context of remote teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic. Moreover, as a boundary condition, we examined the role of intermediate ASE in the relationship between loneliness, student engagement, and perceived humor in learning. A total of 367 undergraduate students from six universities in Indonesia completed an online questionnaire. Data were analyzed using Macro Process version 4 to test the moderating mediation model hypothesis. As expected, the study results show that loneliness is negatively related to ASE and student engagement. ASE is proven to affect student engagement positively;concurrently, it plays an intermediate role in the link between loneliness and student engagement. Finally, humor had a significant moderating effect on learning in the tested model. This study contributes to the existing literature on loneliness and student engagement by uncovering the intermediate role of ASE. Drawing on the social cognitive theory (SCT) and instructional humor processing theory (IHTP), we explored how perceived humor in learning moderates the relationships between loneliness, ASE, and student engagement. © 2024, Asia-Pacific Society for Computers in Education. ABSTRACT

Research has found a correlation between a lack of social links and greater prevalence of mental health issues, indicating that social connection is a key determinant in both physical and mental health outcomes. Social isolation has been related to loneliness, all-cause mortality, cardiovascular disease, and other major health problems. Urban lifestyles, technology advancements, and the COVID-19 pandemic have all contributed to this problem. In order to address related physical and mental health issues, healthcare professionals must have a thorough understanding of the prevalence of social connection impairments as well as how to identify and treat them. This study surveyed primary care physicians on their approach to evaluating social connection in patients and identified potential barriers to gathering this information. The purpose of this study was to explore the attitudes and beliefs of primary care physicians in the United States towards the impact of social connection on the health of their patients and the extent to which they screen and assess for social connection. Surveys were collected from 208 licensed primary care physicians. Results showed the majority of participants agreed that addressing a patient's social connection is as important as addressing their medical needs and that they feel comfortable asking about a patient's current social connection. However, fewer participants reported being well informed about self-report tools or using validated measures to screen for social connection in their practice. These results suggest that there may be a need for more resources to help primary care physicians incorporate screening for social connection into their practice. Background: COVID-19's restrictive measures have significantly affected our health, work and social relationships. As yet, less attention has been given to the changes in sex life. Aim: This study investigates people's satisfaction with sex life in Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Methods: A cross-sectional survey of the general population (18 years and over) was conducted, from 1st to 18th July 2020, in 17 municipalities in Kinshasa and several measures were used: Quality of life MANSA, EQ-5D-3L, UCLA Loneliness;PHQ-9;GAD-7. Prior to conducting data analysis, diagnostic tests for our data were performed to assess distribution, variance and multicollinearity. Descriptive statistics, bivariate correlation and multiple regression analysis were used. Results: Sex life satisfaction increases from young adults aged 18- 35 to those aged 36-55 and then there is a decrease from ages 56-69. After controlling for socio-demographic factors, sex life satisfaction was positively associated with the number and quality of people's friendships (B=0.30, p=0.01) and people's relationships with their families (B=0.32, p=0.03). People who feel lonely have lower sex life satisfaction (B=-0.15, p=0.01). Conclusion: People's quality of their friendships and family relationships are important for their sexual well-being. Healthcare providers and policymakers should consider people's quality of friendships and family relationships when planning to improve the sexual well-being of people in DRC.

ABSTRACT

AimsTo study feasibility and impact of telephone and video communication on perceptions of loneliness and social isolation in community-dwelling older adults.MethodsPurposive flyer distribution to communities, area agencies on aging, meals on wheels, and snowball sampling. Sixteen people met inclusion criteria. Pre- and post-intervention data were collected: UCLA-3, UCLA20, FRAIL Scale, and Social Frailty Scale. Participants were allocated to either telephone or video communication groups, completing 8 weeks of one time per week 45-60-minute conversations.ResultsUCLA-20 demonstrated statistical significance (p = .017) for the full cohort with large effect size (Hedges' g = 1.273). UCLA-3, SFS-8, and FRAIL Scale did not demonstrate statistically significant pre-post differences. No statistically significant differences (p > .05) were identified between the telephone and video communication groups.ConclusionRemote communication may have a positive impact on perceptions of loneliness that appear to be independent of the communication modality utilized. Randomized controlled trials are required to determine if either modality is more effective.

ABSTRACT

Background. Postpartum mothers' mental health has a significant role in mothers' well-being and child's growth and develop-ment. This issue is worsened during a pandemic when social restrictions are regulated, resulting in perceived stress, baby blues, postpartum depression, and other mental health issues. Objective. This study intends to investigate postpartum moth-ers' mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods. This study's methodology is a scoping review using the prism-ScR checklist, the Joanna Briggs Institute critical appraisal tool, and a population, exposure, outcome framework. It uses 4 databases: Pubmed, Willey, Proquest, and ScienceDirect;its inclusion criteria is original English articles that can be accessed in full text between 2020 and 2022. Results. Out of 190 publications, we found 7 that are pertinent to the research goals. Qualitative research, cross-sectional studies, and longitudinal studies make up the research. The mapping result includes 4 themes: the types of mental health problems experi-enced by postpartum moms during the Pandemic, risk and predic-tive factors, postpartum mothers' experiences, and the effects of mothers' mental health problems. Conclusion. After giving birth, most mothers experience stress, anxiety, and depression. Postpartum mental health concerns are influenced by isolation, social exclusion, and crises. The cre-ation of a customized plan for early assistance for a woman's mental health requirements, as well as the establishment of an accessi-ble mental health provider, including medical personnel and medical facilities, is advised for pregnant and postpartum women. only.Copyright © the Author(s), 2023.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: Several populations are at greater risk of severe COVID-19 due to inadequate responses to COVID-19 vaccines. Many of these individuals, and their caregivers, continue practicing varying degrees of social isolation to avoid SARS-CoV-2 infection. Following the end of lockdowns, the behaviors and impacts of continued isolation on the quality-of-life of high-risk populations remain poorly understood. This study describes the main avoidance and protective behaviors and ongoing impacts experienced by adults and caregivers of adults at high-risk of severe COVID-19. Method(s): Four virtual focus groups (April-July 2022) were conducted with individuals at high-risk of severe COVID-19, or caregivers, recruited via a convenience sample from patient panels. A discussion guide of open-ended questions was prepared based on COVID-19 guidance documents and a literature review. For qualitative analyses, an inductive approach was used for behaviors, deductive for impacts. A pre-defined codebook was updated throughout as needed. Salient concepts were defined as those mentioned by >=30% of participants or in every focus-group session. Result(s): Fourteen participants were interviewed (12 patients, 2 caregivers). Participants highlighted continued behaviors greatly impacting their quality-of-life. Avoidance behaviors (staying home, avoiding bystanders, avoiding shopping facilities and gatherings, using delivery services, family protection [43%-64%]) and protective behaviors (masking [79%], vaccination [57%]) were reported. Negative impacts included family relationship impacts (71%), collapse of social relationships (57%), difficulties accessing healthcare (43%), anxiety, fear, loneliness and depression (36%-50%), and impacts on employment/finances (36%). Positive impacts included the advent of telehealth (57%) and recognizing family importance (36%). Lack of trust in authority (57%) and hoarding of medications (36%) were negative general impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted. Concepts reported by patients and caregivers were similar. Conclusion(s): Individuals at high-risk of severe COVID-19 and their caregivers maintained avoidance and protective behaviors similar to those reported during lockdowns. ABSTRACT

Aims: During the COVID-19 pandemic, care for the elderly in the community was greatly limited. Accordingly, the demand for alternative community care have increased to cope with changing situations. In this study, we tried to find out whether the companion robot improved mood state and related problem in depressive or isolated community dwelling elderly. Method(s): For 186 community dwelling elderly who have received social welfare service due to depression or social isolation, we provided companion robot that could support their daily living. The robot was equipped with special program that could recognize and respond to the participant's own emotion. It was part of behavioural activation techniques which is one of powerful treatment for depression. The self-report questionnaires were used to measure changes in cognitive function, depression, suicidality, loneliness, resilience and satisfaction of life. Outcomes were measured before using companion robot and after 3 months, and we compared them. Result(s): The elderly using companion robot for 3 months showed improved cognitive function, depression (p < .001), suicidality (p < .001), and loneliness (p = .033) in the self-report questionnaire. Resilience (p = .749) and satisfaction of life (p = .246) were also improved but not reached significance. Conclusion(s): These findings showed that the use of companion robot with emotional recognition coaching program could help improve depression, cognitive function, loneliness and suicidal ideation. In particular, this effect was also useful for those who were diagnosed with depression. Also if we can put more techniques of behavioural activation programs into robot, it could be useful in community care for depressive and isolated elderly.

ABSTRACT

In response to COVID-19 pandemic-related social restrictions, university students have reported being more depressed, lonelier, and less resilient, potentially affected by changes within the academic system. The present study investigates how students' social and physical well-being affect their psychological well-being and additionally explores the role of the learning environment. To this end, we analyzed secondary data collected during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic with multiple regression and explorative analysis. Results indicate that social resources - in particular, the quality rather than the quantity - positively influenced students' psychological well-being. Engaging in physical exercise appeared beneficial, whereas consuming drugs remained a contradictory predictor. Emergency remote teaching appeared a main factor that predicted students' well-being. This powerful effect masked the positive influence the teachers could have had. Given the profound changes in the academic system due to persistent social distancing requirements, these insights could provide valuable input when designing a healthy post-pandemic learning environment.

The aim of this study was to explore children's experience and responses to the Covid-19 pandemic through their illustrations and short narrations. During October 2020 and January 2021 data was collected from thirteen children aged 9–10 years old in a primary school in the North-West of England. Children were asked to draw their thoughts and feelings about the pandemic and to write a short narration to accompany the drawing. Thematic analysis of data revealed that during the pandemic children at this age have an understanding of death, experience death anxiety and are able to use creative expression to facilitate meaning of the impact of lockdown on their lives such as feeling isolated, lonely, sad and bored. Creative expression also facilitated adaptive coping mechanisms derived from being able to spend more time with family. The data on primary school children is part of a larger study which involved surveys and interviews with children aged 12–16 years in secondary schools. A quantitative method is adopted to survey 197 students at the department of social work at a university in Taiwan from April to May in 2020. The study aims to explore the impact of the new coronavirus on social work students' career determination. The result presents the participants with higher social loneliness have lower "Career Determination of Clinical Medical Social Work (CDCMSW)", and the mental burden feeling, and family relationship are predictive of the CDCMSW. © 2023 Author(s).

Not only do the early pandemic fads of sourdough baking and mushroom foraging make the narrator's frontier-style life now seem less removed from reality, the loneliness, uncertainty, and subdued terror that form the backdrop of her daily routine perhaps for the first time will be relatable to students. [...]their loneliness begets deeper woes: the most recently released Youth Risk Behavior Survey (2023) issued by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention shares that almost half of high school students in 2021 reported "persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness," a significant increase from prepandemic times. In a variation of an American Association of Teachers of German sponsored public graffiti event created by my colleague several years ago to commemorate the fall of the Berlin Wall, I will repeat her prompt: "Which walls hold you back?" Key to her question was the understanding of a "wall" as any kind of social, physical, or mental impediment that prevented students from fully realizing their goals. ABSTRACT

Already an urgent issue before the Covid-19 pandemic, the reality of loneliness became plain to see especially during the lockdowns and social protocols of those years. What we understand about this social phenomenon, however, is often as vague as the biblical assessment that lonely living is "not good" (Genesis 2:18). My study expands and explains what the Bible has to say on the topic (1) by identifying other relevant texts about loneliness, (2) by studying the imagery of the "lonely bird" in Psalm 102, and (3) by bringing these insights into conversation with contemporary psychological research. Their differences notwithstanding, I will show that the ancient psalm and modern psychology join their voices in portraying loneliness as a liminal and lethal force. Inasmuch as the struggle of articulation and acknowledgement hinders many from seeking support, the first-person poetry of the "lonely bird" in Psalm 102 can give language to human experience, break false assumptions, provide companionship, and pave the way towards a new-found freedom.
